Chapter 2 Meditation – Transferring Trauma to Grounded Choice and Gratitude
Begin by setting in. Find a position where your body feels supported, seated or lying down. Allow your eyes to gently close or soften your gaze.
Take a slow breath in through the nose and release it through the mouth. Again, inhale, feeling the chest and belly expand… and exhale, letting the body soften. One more breath, like this, signaling your nervous system that it is safe to slow down.
Now allow your breathing to return to its natural rhythm. There is nothing you need to fix, achieve, or understand right now. Just arrive.
Bring your attention inward. Beneath roles, habits, expectations, and stories. There is an authentic self. The part of you that existed before you learned who you were “supposed” to be. Without forcing an image, simply sense that presence. It may feel like openness, warmth, curiosity, or quiet knowing. This is you, unchanging. Whole, and intact.
Silently say to yourself, “I remember who I am beneath it all.”
Now gently turn toward your beliefs and behaviors. Not to judge them, but to understand their source. Ask inwardly, with kindness:
Where did this belief come from?
Who taught me this way of being?
Did it once protect me?
Notice that many patterns were created not because something was wrong with you, but because something happened to you. Let that truth soften the edges of self-criticism.
Bring awareness to trauma, not as an identity, but as unfinished time. Trauma is not just what happened. It is what happened that hasn’t been allowed to be over yet.
Notice where your body may still be holding the past. A tight jaw, guarded chest, restless stomach, or heavy shoulders. Place a gentle hand there if it feels right. And breathe into that place, saying silently, that was then. This is now. You are here. You survived. The moment is different. I can let that be over.
Now imagine yourself grounding. Feel the weight of your body supported by the earth beneath you. Visualize roots growing from your feet or spine, moving down into the ground, steady, strong, present. The earth receives everything without judgment. Let it hold what you no longer need to carry.
Bring your attention to choice. Notice how often choice was taken away, by fear, conditioning, or survival. Now gently and deliberately, give it back to yourself. Say, “I give myself permission to choose. I choose how I respond. I choose what I carry forward.”
Feel the empowerment of that truth, not loud or forceful, but quiet, steady, and real.
Now turn toward the child within you. The younger self who learned to adapt, to hide, to endure. Picture them in whatever way feels natural. Notice their eyes, their posture. Their need.
Sit beside them in your imagination. Let your presence be calm and grounded. And say to them, slowly and clearly, “You are safe now. You don’t have to be on guard anymore. I am here, and I will not leave you.”
Feel how the body responds, even a small softening matters.
Invite old fears to loosen their grip. You don’t need to push them away. Simply thank them for trying to protect you and let them know they are no longer needed.
Imagine fears as old coats you’ve outgrown. One by one, gently take them off, set them down. Notice the lightness underneath.
Reflect now on insight and emotion. Insight is the car, it shows you the way. But emotion is the fuel that creates change.
Allow yourself to feel, not analyze, what it would be like to live with more freedom, more authenticity, more self-trust. Let that feeling move through your body. This is the energy of transformation.
Finally, turn toward gratitude. Not as denial of pain, but as a shift in orientation.
Gently bring to mind something that is right, a breath, a moment of peace. Your willingness to heal, your capacity to choose again.
Gratitude does not erase what was wrong. It simply widens the lens. It reminds you of what is alive, supportive, and possible.
Silently say, “I honor how far I’ve come. I appreciate what is here now.”
Begin to return. Feel the room around you. Notice the surface beneath your body. Gently deepen your breath.
When you are ready, slowly open your eyes, bringing this sense of grounding, choice, and compassion with you.
Remember, you are not broken. You are becoming whole, again and again.
